The North Shore Advantage

Most helicopter tours in Kauai depart from Lihue Airport (LIH) on the East Side. However, for those staying in Hanalei or Princeville, the Princeville Airport (HPV) offers a more localized gateway to the most dramatic scenery on the island.
“All Killer, No Filler”
When you depart from Lihue, you typically spend the first 10-15 minutes flying over sugar cane fields and agricultural land before reaching the Napali Coast or Waimea Canyon.
Departing from Princeville puts you over Hanalei Bay and the Napali sea cliffs within minutes. For a 45-minute tour, you spend a much higher percentage of your flight time over “premium” scenery.
Current Operators (2025 Update)
The Princeville market has changed significantly:
- Blue Hawaiian Helicopters: The dominant carrier at Princeville. They operate their premium Eco-Star fleet here.
- Sunshine Helicopters: Permanently Closed. As of late 2024, Sunshine no longer operates from Princeville, reducing the options for North Shore travelers.
Weather Risks
The North Shore is the “wet side” of Kauai. While this means more waterfalls, it also means a higher frequency of weather cancellations compared to the drier Lihue area.
Expert Tip
If you book from Princeville, try to secure an 8:00 AM or 9:00 AM slot. The trade winds are typically lighter, and the morning sun illuminates the interior valleys of the North Shore beautifully.Pricing Difference
Expect to pay a premium. Tours from Princeville are often $30 - $50 more expensive than the equivalent flight from Lihue. You are paying for the convenience of the location and the immediate access to the coast.
