Kauai Helicopter Operators Comparison
An absolute comparison of the major Kauai helicopter companies: Blue Hawaiian, Jack Harter, Island Helicopters, and Sunshine.
The Landscape
The Kauai helicopter market is an oligopoly. A few major players control the airspace, each with a distinct philosophy.

Blue Hawaiian
The "Corporate Standard". Features the WhisperStar fleet with stadium seating and the highest safety infrastructure on the island.
- Fleet Airbus EC130
- Flight Time 45-50 Min
- Safety SMS & TOPS

Jack Harter
The purist's choice. Originators of the doors-off flight. Agility and maximum flight time for those who want to see every detail.
- Fleet Hughes 500
- Flight Time 60-65 Min
- Safety Turbine / Skilled

Island Helicopters
The only operator permitted to land at Manawaiopuna Falls. A must for cinema fans, though watch out for "drip pricing" surcharges.
- Fleet Airbus AS350
- Flight Time 50-55 Min
- Safety Turbine

Mauna Loa / Ali'i
Affordable private charters for couples. Uses the R44 piston engine, which we advise caution with due to lower safety margins.
- Fleet Robinson R44
- Flight Time 55 Min
- Safety Piston Risk

Safari Helicopters
Features unique "Safari Skylights" floor windows. Note the 2019 safety incident in the review before booking.
- Fleet Airbus AS350
- Flight Time 50-55 Min
- Safety Use Caution

Airborne Aviation
The alternative to Jack Harter for doors-off thrills. Strict weight limits apply, but availability is often better.
- Fleet Hughes 500
- Flight Time 50 Min
- Safety Turbine

Wings Over Kauai
The "motion sickness cure." A fixed-wing plane tour that is smoother and half the price of a helicopter.
- Fleet AirVan / Cessna
- Flight Time 65 Min
- Safety Plane Safety
Who to Avoid?
We recommend exercising extreme caution with operators utilizing the Robinson R44 piston helicopter, especially following the July 2024 Ali’i Kauai crash. Read our Safety Analysis for details on “mast bumping” and turbulence risks.
Market Updates: Closures & Warnings (2025)
The Kauai aviation market has contracted significantly.
- Sunshine Helicopters: Permanently Closed. As of late 2024, Sunshine Helicopters has ceased operations. This leaves Blue Hawaiian as the primary provider for Princeville departures.
- Safari Helicopters: Status Caution. Following the 2019 fatal crash (7 deaths) and shifting market dynamics, availability is inconsistent. We recommend verifying current Part 135 status directly.
- Ali’i Kauai Air Tours: High Risk Warning. Following two major accidents in 2024 (one fatal), we advise travelers to avoid this operator until the NTSB investigations conclude. The use of R44 piston aircraft in the Na Pali wind tunnel presents a specific risk profile we cannot endorse.
